Gae to channel Brisbane's Grandma Uber on the Coffs Coast

RIDESHARING is not often linked with pensioners in regional areas.

When Coffs Harbour grandma Gae Channells discovered ridesharing app Go Buggy was coming to Coffs Harbour via Facebook it provided her a new lease on life.

Finding Go Buggy came as Gae, a local of more than 50 years, was made redundant.

"I thought no one is going to employ me now at 68, but I could be my own boss," Gae said.

Gae was inspired to get involved with rideshare after hearing about a Brisbane grandma, known as 'Grandma Uber', who aims to help young women get home safely around the city.

Here in Coffs, Gae hopes to be the 'Grandma Go Buggy' when the service launches on September 6.

Gae is one of three drivers set to give lifts around the Coffs Coast with Go Buggy.

What started as an alternative to taxis in the cities for younger people, ridesharing has quickly evolved to become more than simply getting a lift.

Go Buggy, like Uber, enables both passengers and drivers to see who they are travelling with.

A point of difference with Go Buggy is passengers can choose if they'd like a male or female driver.

The ability to choose, Gae says will appeal to many on the Coffs Coast from refugee women to older ladies, like her 98-year-old mother.

"There all sorts of different age groups that I think would be interested in having an older female drive them around," she said.

"I think there is going to be a wide range of ages that will be interested in rideshare."

Gae's granddaughter Paige Channells has given her grandma the tick of approval and is eager to see her around town.

"I think it's really good of her," Paige said.

"I'd rather grandma picking me up."

As a long-time local, Gae also wants to provide the tourists she takes around the region with tips on making the most of their holidays in the region.

As the world embraces rideshare, Gae thinks the Coffs Coast is ready to do the same.

"Everyone I've spoken to about it has said: 'It's about time something like that came to Coffs Harbour, it'll be great."
