Funeral overtime charges waived by council in tight call
UPDATE 2.30pm: Councillors have voted 6-5 in favour of waiving two, outstanding funeral overtime charges lodged by the council against Gregson and Weight Funeral Directors.
As part of the lengthy, robust debate, unanimous agreement was also reached that a review of funeral overtime charges would also be conducted to ensure greater clarity in future.
UPDATE: Cr Rogerson has asked for the council to show leniency in the matter, and waive the overtime fees lodged against Gregson and Weight Funeral Directors.
Cr Rogerson also asked councillors support his push for officers to request changes to the schedule of fees and charges, to ensure no future funeral overtime charges would be incurred.
Cr Tim Dwyer said he supported the push to have the schedule of charges scrutinised and asked his colleagues to keep in mind they'd already written off a $31,000 debt today, when considering whether to waive the $354 overtime charges in dispute.
Earlier:
COUNCILLOR Greg Rogerson is currently calling on his fellow councillors for support in setting down ground rules to ensure a stop is put to overtime charges for funerals.
Cr Rogerson opened with his disbelief the matter had reached the position it was, in front of a full council ordinary meeting, before expressing his disappointment at what he perceived to be a less-than satisfactory investigation into the two incidents that led to the overtime charges system coming under scrutiny.
"I don't think we (council) have demonstrated too much of it (common sense) in this situation," Cr Rogerson said.
Updates to come.
