Freedom of Entry route and schedule
ON SATURDAY at 10am, about 50 armed servicemen and women will march through Kingaroy to be granted Freedom of Entry by South Burnett Regional Council Mayor Keith Campbell.
The military personnel are from the Defence Force School of Signals Electronic Warfare Wing, which is based in the Borneo Barracks at Cabarlah.
They will form up behind the Kingaroy Town Hall from 9-10am, at which time they will march, heading north along Youngman St.
The unit will turn right into Haly St and shortly after 10am they'll be intercepted by Kingaroy acting officer in charge Senior Sergeant Scott Prendergast outside the Healthy Noodle.
Snr Sgt Prendergast will challenge the unit's right to be armed while in Kingaroy and the Electronic Warfare Wing commanding officers will present a formal invitation from the council.
At this point Snr Sgt Prendergast will let the soldiers pass and proceed along Haly St and then turn into Glendon St, where they'll be met and inspected by Mayor Campbell and assorted guests and dignitaries.
Cr Campbell will give a brief speech welcoming the troops and this will mark the end of the formal ceremony.
Electronic Warfare Wing Warrant Officer Chris Sharp is helping to organise the event and hopes it will mark the beginning of a long relationship between Kingaroy and the forces from Cabarlah.
"It'll keep us interacting with Kingaroy and the South Burnett region for years to come and hopefully we'll build social ties and good camaraderie,” WO Sharp said.
The Australian Army Band Brisbane will march with the Electronic Warfare unit to help keep the rhythm and entertain onlookers.
"They're a real highlight because they are really skilled musicians,” WO Sharp said.
"The music they provide is excellent.”
