Free and thrifty ways to trim the flab in Tweed
YOUR wallet might also lose some weight when you embark on a new exercise regime, but that doesn't have to be the case.
Sporting equipment, joining fees and membership payments can soon add up, but there's plenty of free and cheap options in Tweed.
Former gym owner and life-long fitness enthusiast Ross Kemp said he believed joining fees were "a bit of a take".
"Fifteen years ago there was no such thing as joining fees," Mr Kemp said.
He and wife Ruth stay fit by swimming in Jack Evans Boat Harbour most mornings.
"It's great still water training," he said. "When you go to the beach conditions are not always the best for swimming training.
"All you need are swimming trunks."
Mr Kemp also works out at North Kirra Surf Life Saving Club. "If you an active member of the surf club you can use the gym," Mr Kemp said.
"You do have to know what you are doing. There is no one there to train you."
Genesis Fitness Tweed Heads South manager Sasha Moase said gym membership was an option for people who needed a little help with their fitness.
"We have a five-day free trial and we also have free three personal training sessions," Ms Moase said.
"We do have concession and student rates."
Ms Moase said there were different packages available and depended on what you needed.
Tips for cheap fitness:
The goal is getting fit so if there are issues with motivation then consider the gym where there is more support.
The more fun you have the more likely you are to stick with it so seek out running or walking clubs in your area.
Shop around. Gyms often have special deals to attract new members. There are also gyms that exempt joining fees at certain times of the year.
Avoid gym contracts.
Seek out quality sporting equipment as it will save you money in the long run.
