Frank to face off with govt over Boyne Valley flooding

FOR 15 long years Frank McKee has been appealing to successive State Governments to stop overflow from Awoonga Dam regularly leaving Boyne Valley residents stranded.

He's hoping this will be the last year he spends his time and money petitioning politicians to do more than promise to investigate the issue.

This month, Queensland's most powerful politicians are coming to Gladstone and Mr McKee will have a chance to face members of the same party that he says created the problem when the dam walls were raised in 2002 under Labor Premier Peter Beattie.

When the water can't flow fast enough over the spillway, it runs out the other side, over the Gladstone-Monto Rd - flooding the only road out of the Boyne Valley.

When it rains the valley is totally cut off from the outside world with no mobile service and only a few privately owned satellite phones in the district.

Mr McKee says between 2010 and 2013 residents were trapped for 22 days.

He heavily petitioned the previous LNP government, but just when he was close to a potential solution "the drongos got too cocky and got themselves kicked out".

"These idiots have made a high wall and a low road that floods," Mr McKee said.

"They have treated us like idiots so I don't mind calling them idiots.

"I've spoken about this to anyone who will listen to me. It's like we're mushrooms.

"If I was to take a herd of cows or a load of hay and put it on the road at Bunnings blocking the traffic, how long do you think it will be before I was in jail?

"Not long I'd say. But they can this to us and nobody cares."

Mr McKee feels both sides of politics have brushed the problem under the table.

But this could be his lucky year when he gets the chance to address the Premier and Minister Mark Bailey directly at the Community Cabinet Meeting in Gladstone on January 31.
