Forget Pinterest, be true to you on your wedding day
BRIDES come in all shapes and sizes, different backgrounds and budgets and they all have different ideas on what they perceive the perfect wedding day to be which can make this question a nightmare:
What is a wedding theme and do we need one?
The simple answer is yes, but it needs to be one that reflects you and your partner and not what's on trend.
You're about to blow this huge wad of cash on a single day, and social media like Pinterest is putting so much pressure on you to invent a wedding style. So best advice, step away from that keyboard.
Although Pinterest provides an amazing source of ideas from dress to decor, overloading on these images can be paralysing and stop you from making any decisions. Worse still, you opt for copycat decisions that don't really reflect you or your partner.
So take a breath and remember you know yourselves better than anyone else. You know what you like too so platforms like Pinterest and Google Images are great as a guide or for inspiration to help you build on your own ideas but don't let them manipulate you into making choices based on other people's taste.
Now to the thing I know best - hair.
The most important thing when you're considering your wedding day hairstyle is not to change who you are. You want to recognise yourself in those photos.
Honestly your shoe collection should have a greater impact on your bridal style than those Pinterest boards. If you already have a definable style you tend to return to every time don't discard it because this is "your big day" to make a statement. Don't veer away from who you really are and what you truly like. Trust your instinct.
When it comes to wedding hair, a lot of brides think they need to go on this dramatic journey of change, like growing their hair, changing colour dramatically or adding a multitude of hair extensions to look like lady Godiva. Being your most beautiful self doesn't mean you need to change your style dramatically. Your family and friends don't want to see a bride they hardly recognise.
The key to having the perfect bridal hairstyle really does depend on the relationship you have with your stylist. This is such a key part of looking and feeling good on your big day.
Make sure you have regular appointments so your hairdresser is familiar with your hair, knows your face shape, as well as other tricks required like creating extra volume on your crown through the blow-drying process, and how much product you need to help you hold curl.
If you live miles away from the hairstylist that will be looking after you on the day, which is common when Grafton girls living elsewhere come home to get married, try to build a relationship when you do get home in the months before the big day. It may only be a treatment and blow dry on a weekend but it gives us a sense of who you are so we all feel a little more relaxed when it comes time to work on the perfect do.
What do we consider when helping you choose the perfect hairstyle?
There are lots of factors to consider, but both the design of your wedding dress and the shape of your neckline are paramount. It's best to work your hairstyle around this so you have a seamless look on the day.
It's always a great idea when you're at a dress fitting to try your hair several ways yourself just to get a feel for what looks best.
Don't forget to take a picture of you in your dress to show your stylist.
The wedding venue and weather conditions will also play a large part in choosing a style.
Windswept and a little dishevelled is a look I personally love, but not if it started out as sleek French roll. Consider your destination and choose hair that will withstand any weather changes.
And last but not least the latest trend with brides is changing your look from the ceremony to the reception.
This is every bride's chance to have more than one hair and make-up look on their day, from light to dark, softer to more sultry, vision in white to vamp, all in the one day. It's either your style or not.
But this is where we the professionals come in. I love this latest trend and so far have reinvented several brides before they make their grand entrance into the reception. But this can also be done yourself or with the help of a cluey bridesmaid but it's a tricky business and takes some planning and preparation.
