Flooding cuts highways to Mt Isa

Police are advising motorists there is currently no way to travel by road to Mount Isa and further west.

Both the Landsborough and Flinders highways have been cut by flooding, with water as deep as two metres over the road at some locations.

The Landsborough Highway is closed at Winton, however locals are being allowed to travel as far as McKinlay. It is then closed to all traffic from McKinlay to Julia Creek.

The Flinders Highway is closed between Julia Creek and Cloncurry.

These highways are expected to be closed for a number of days.

Motorists are being urged to avoid all travel to or through these centres, as many people are becoming stranded at Julia Creek and surrounding areas and as a result, accommodation is sparse.

A number of cars have been stranded because of flood waters over the last number of days.

Police continue to urge motorists not to drive through flooded roads.

If it is flooded, forget it.

Motorists can keep up-to-date on road closures by calling 13 19 40 or visiting
