First and only debate gives candidates platform
THE final countdown is under way until most head to the ballots to cast a vote in the state election.
Pre-polls are open, but undoubtedly many will head out on Saturday to have a say.
Candidates had the opportunity on Monday morning to dispel any concerns and boost their candidacy ambitions to be your local member in the first and only meet the candidates debate.
Four of the six took to the microphone, while Greens candidate Antonia van Geuns was absent and Independent Jay Nauss is partway through a cycle tour speaking to voters.
The Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce hosted the discussion at the wine college, giving Independent Rob Mackenzie, Labor's Joel Richters, One Nation's Josh Coyne and the LNP's James Lister a platform to advocate for themselves.
Pre-prepared questions were put to the four while attendees were given opportunity to ask queries on issues affecting Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt.
The region's future water security was the most discussed issue while ways to promote the area going forward were also key talking points.
Most advocated for the Emu Swamp Dam, while Mr Richters and Mr Coyne erred on the side of caution, highlighting its potential, but suggesting the matter needed further investigation before they could chuck their eggs into one basket.
Power supply and reliability was another hot topic.
Home owners, land holders, farmers and renters are all feeling the pinch caused by rising electricity prices and each candidate was given a chance to share how they'll tackle the crippling issue.
"Electricity prices are on the tip of everybody's tongues at the moment. I have said for 20 or more years that essential services such as water, electricity and gas, should be owned, operated and managed by government,” Mr Mackenzie said.
For a debate with candidates from opposing political ideals and plans, the hour long meeting never really stoked any fire from the combatants.
Instead, the four were quite happy to joke and compliment their opposition.
The only time it teetered on awkward was when the four were quizzed on preferences.
Josh Coyne said he'd preference Rob Mackenzie first, as did Labor's Joel Richters.
The LNP will give first preferences to Independent Jay Nauss while Rob Mackenzie will preference One Nation's Josh Coyne.
"I believe the LNP will finish first or second in this contest and our preferences will never see the light of day,” Mr Lister said.
