Firemen go hairy for Movember fundraiser

IF YOU moustache the Stanthorpe firefighters why they're growing out their mos, you might need to shave it for later.

Ian Barden, Brendon Barker, Sam Maugeri, Michael Stefanon, Tom Dunn, and Reece Lancaster-Kelly are participating in this years' Movember challenge. The Movember foundation raises funds for men's health with a focus on prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health and suicide prevention.

Stanthorpe Fire Station captain Ian Barnden said many fire stations participated every year.

"It's competitive between the stations to see who can raise the most money and to raise awareness about prostate cancer,” Mr Barnden said.

"(It's) making sure you get yourself checked out (because) it can happen to anyone at any time.”

In Australia 1 in 8 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 75 while testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young Australian men. The Stanthorpe fire fighters are hoping to raise $1000 for the foundation.

"I've probably done (Movember) around three or four times,” Mr Barnden said.

"We've always raised around $1000 with the different groups I've done it with.”

As for the moustaches, they're just about at their peak.

"They're starting to get pretty good now, so we'll get some comments in the next few days,” he said.
