THE digital revolution has begun at Fire Station 101 in the heart of Ipswich.

Renovations to transform the former fire station headquarters at 101 Limestone Street, Ipswich, into the region's new digital innovation and start-up hub officially started this week.

Fire Station 101 will position Ipswich as a leader of the digital economy, giving life to new businesses and fostering the expansion of existing ones.

Speaking at the CBD facility, Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said Fire Station 101 was about providing a community with the tools to tackle digital technology industries and jobs of the future.

"Fire Station 101 and the digital economy are all about the future of our kids," he said.

"Ipswich was named in the world's Top 7 Most Intelligent Communities for 2015 by the Intelligent Community Forum.

"Innovations like Fire Station 101 will only enhance that global reputation.

"We're going to diversify the Ipswich economy and embrace knowledge-intensive industries that generate export income and boost employment."

Ipswich City Enterprises Chairman Councillor Paul Tully said Fire Station 101 would help to create the knowledge-based jobs of the future. He said the facility would also be a leading venue for events, training and mentoring.

Fire Station 101 is an incubator and accelerator to activate innovation, entrepreneurship and opportunity.
