Film crew brings family to Airlie Beach
WHEN Richa Weusthof wrote to the host of a Dutch television show, she said she had three dreams.
Last week, one of those dreams came true when the television show 'All You Need Is Love' brought Richa's family and a film crew to Airlie Beach.
Richa, who is from the Netherlands, moved to the Whitsundays in July last year to be with her boyfriend, Ben Wardroper.
The young couple met in the Netherlands in 2012 when Ben was travelling in Europe and working in London.
Just one week before he was to travel to the Netherlands to meet Richa's family, he was involved in a horrific workplace accident which left him confined to a wheelchair.
After intense rehabilitation in London and in Brisbane, he returned to Australia to live in the Whitsundays with his parents, Scott and Linda Wardroper.
Within months, his girlfriend moved all the way here from the other side of the world to be with him.
Richa later wrote to the Dutch television show saying her three dreams were that Ben could walk again; that her mother would be cancer-free; and that her family would be able to travel to Australia to meet Ben and his family.
It was an absolute surprise for Ben and Richa last week when the host of the show, Robert ten Brink, arrived with a film crew as well as Richa's parents, John and Astrid and her sister Nienke.
"I was lost for words. It was just overwhelming," Ben said.
"My biggest dream was that everybody could be together," Richa said.
The Weusthof family had spent six days in Australia before arriving in the Whitsundays where they witnessed other families being reunited as part of the show.
The night before arriving in Airlie, Astrid was being interviewed and was asked to describe the most beautiful part of Australia she had seen so far.
"I haven't seen her yet," she said, referring to the meeting she was about to have with her daughter in Airlie Beach the following day.
Astrid said it was a magical moment to finally meet Ben and to be able to see her daughter again and hug her.
The show is expected to air on Dutch television in January.
