Fiji Day in the park a swell time

THE Fiji Association of Mackay gathered at Queens Park on the weekend to celebrate Fiji Independence Day.

A massive feast, music and activities were enjoyed by the members who gather for the annual event.

The men brewed up a traditional Fijian drink called kava, made from the roots of the plant piper methysticum, a member of the pepper family.

The drink is native to the South Pacific and is often consumed as part of traditional ceremonies.

The women were kept busy preparing a huge array of salads and barbecue food.

Lucy Rabonu said the event brought friends and family together.

"It's a big celebration for everyone and an opportunity for all of us to catch up,” she said.

"This is the second time we've had the event outside and it's good because the kids can run around and play.

"We all bring a plate of food and sit and share stories.”

October 10 is the anniversary of Fiji's independence in 1970 from British colonial rule.
