ALMOST every morning St Mary's students Darby and Esther Bambling ride their bikes to school with their Mum.

The grade 2 and prep students' parent then often pushes their bikes home whilst they are at school, leaving the school bike rack empty most days.

Today is National Ride 2 School Day, where students are urged to try walking or riding their bikes to school.

No South Burnett schools were signed up, however St Mary's primary school Principal Pam Radcliff said she was keen to talk to students about active ways to get to school.

"Think about walking to school sometimes or riding your bike... or getting Mum to drop you off at a friend's place and you can walk with a friend," Ms Radcliff said.

Riding to school is good because kids are making a conscience effort to maintain physical activity by going to a destination, she said.

Talking about riding and walking to school gives kids a chance to also learn road safety independence and be aware of stranger danger, Ms Radcliff said.

Only one in five Queensland kids ride their bikes to school, despite four in five back in the 1970s.

Bicycle Queensland chief executive officer Anne Savage said there are many benefits to riding to school.

"While the world has changed drastically since then, and riding to school isn't always easy, it's well worth the effort," she said.
