Fear The Walking Dead hits the right notes in return
IT WAS always going to be tough for Fear The Walking Dead (FTWD) to find its feet after the success of runaway hit of AMC's original series The Walking Dead, but FTWD has finally done it.
The series stumbled through its opening season, but FTWD has vastly improved this season, and will return with one of its most powerful episodes yet.
Clark has been through rehab for a drug addiction (the first season shows he is very well known to police), and his withdrawals deepen as the outbreak spreads.
While we've followed Nick's journey closely, we still don't really know too much about him.
That is set to change in "Grotesque", as we spend the whole episode exploring Nick's actions after the fiery mid-season finale.
Flashbacks are intermingled with his solo adventure across north eastern Mexico. The group separated after the events of the mid-season finale, and Nick chose to leave the burning compound on foot.
"Grotesque" forces to Nick into survival mode: he has to defend, look out for, and find supplies for himself, and it takes its place as one of the best episodes of the series to date.
Where the set pieces of other great FTWD episodes have been grandiose, it is the minimalist approach to "Grotesque" that makes it a perfect resumption to this series.
He comes face-to-face with the expected challenges - a group of hungry walkers - as well as a few new and unexpected people.
What sets Grotesque apart from the rest of both FTWD and TWD is how Nick has always approached walkers differently to everyone else.
If you enjoy character development, Grotesque is the perfect re-entry to a franchise that hasn't set the world on fire. If you're chasing action, you'll get a fair whack of that later this year.
Fear The Walking Dead airs at 1.30pm and 7.30pm on FX every Monday.
