Favourites tumble as underdogs hunt title
RANKINGS and statistics will count for little tomorrow when the 2017 Hutchinson Builders Toowoomba International develops into a semi-final shootout.
The top four tournament men and women meet from 11am tomorrow at the Baker St tennis centre for spots in Sunday's finals.
Japan's Eir Hozumi (2) is the only seeded women's player to make it through to the semis with her 6-2, 6-2 win today over compatriot Chihiro Muramatsu.
She will meet Ellen Perez who won an epic quarter-final 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 over fellow Aussie Alison Bai.
Abigail Tere-Apisha from PNG advanced to the final four after rival Marianna Zakarlyuk retired in the third set.
Waiting for her tomorrow will be Australia's Astra Sharma who eliminated fifth seed Japan's Erika Sema 6-4, 6-3.
Maverick Banes won his way through to the weekend without dropping a set.
He downed his training partner Gavin van Peperzeel today 6-1, 7-6 to set up a meeting with Andrew Harris who ousted Ben Mitchell 6-4, 7-5
"I've been able to get through a few close ones,” Banes said.
"I've been working on playing more aggressively on a whole and hopefully I can execute again tomorrow.”
Number three seed Dayne Kelly will meet another Aussie, Jason Kubler, in the other semi.
Kelly outlasted Calum Puttergull 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 today while Kubler was forced to work hard against the Netherlands' Sem Verbeek before prevailing 6-4, 6-7, 6-0.
Play tomorrow also features the women's doubles final.
