MP says trade deal struck with Japan is benefiting farmers
CATTLE farmers and fishers are among those enjoying the benefits of the trade agreement with Japan since it came into force 12 months ago, according to Federal member for Page Kevin Hogan.
He said the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement, or JAEPA, was generating increasing confidence among our exporters with sales to Asia on the rise in a variety of commodities.
"Since the agreement with Japan came into force on 15 January 2015, it has provided local businesses - large and small - with exciting new export opportunities, particularly those involved in agriculture," Mr Hogan said.
"Asia's growing middle class is certainly developing a taste for Australia's clean, green produce with export sales of frozen shrimp and prawns to Japan have soared 90 per cent, with exports of fresh/chilled beef is up 24 per cent. This is great news for our local farmers and fishers, and has a flow-on effect for the fishing towns, such as Yamba, and beef towns like Casino."
Mr Hogan said these figures illustrate the value of free trade agreements with Korea, Japan and China.
