Family bonding over home renovations is an accident
I have learnt a few things since renovation work started at our house.
For starters, when a builder's contract says the job will take one month, take that time and double it.
Then if you come across a few rainy days, double it again.
I've also learnt that doing renovations to the house will also require renovations to the front garden, once the tradies have finished stomping their way through the gerberas.
The most recent lesson learnt is a little bit of paint goes a long way.
This little gem of knowledge came about after my partner, being sunsafe before going to do painting outdoors, did a bit of slip, slop and slap, then a dramatic slip.
The second slip was while carrying a 10 litre can of white paint through the dining room.
And no, the lid wasn't secure on the paint tin. Of course.
So the dining room, one room that hadn't needed any attention during the renovations, all of a sudden got a brand new Pro Hart inspired abstract wall painting.
And so did the floor, the rug, the computer, the chair and the wine rack cupboard.
One anxious yell for help resulted in all hands on deck in a frantic attempt to remove the new paint job.
To get the picture even clearer in your head some more background information needs to be given.
When I heard the distress call I was about to have a shower.
The tone of his voice told me it was urgent, so I grabbed what I could and came rushing out.
So there was me, in my fluffy pink dressing gown, trying my hardest to keep my modesty while frantically wiping, mopping, rinsing and laughing.
Yes, laughing, at the absurdity.
The Laurel and Hardy like event continued, as I slipped over on the wet floor, landing on the kids as they were on hands and knees too.
Despite all the chaos we managed to save the day… just don't look too close at the wine rack.
A few bottles put in there, and no-one will notice I'm sure.
But one thing I did notice; I'd never seen the kids work so hard.
Maybe next time I want them to clean up their rooms all I have to do is get out a tin of paint?
