Families get out to Kent Saddlery's Heritage Day

KENT Saddlery is celebrating five years at the New England Highway shop this weekend.

Lyle and Helen Kent decided to put on a great family event, the Kent Saddlery Heritage Day, for the occasion.

"We shifted our business to the highway five years ago,” Lyle said.

"That's coming up this first weekend of December so we wanted to celebrate that. We did have (A Heritage Day) four years a go which was a success so we thought we would do it again.”

The activity-packed event on Saturday will make for a fun day for the whole family.

Carol Rix's animal nursery is set to be a favourite among kids.

"Some of the things we got are really popular among kids particularly the animal nursery which has got a baby lama and a baby donkey,” Lyle said.

"Carol Rix is going to have a few different animals and that's a great feature.”

Baby llama Paladin will be one of the animals waiting for a cuddle at the heritage day.

Other free activities include wood chopping, blacksmithing and sheep shearing demonstrations, machinery display, story-telling, whip plaiting, Condamine bell making, spinning and weaving as well as leather moulding and stitching.

Folk musicians Penny Davies and Roger Ilott are going to perform on the day and 10FM will be there too.

"We'll have a marquee out there and lots of activities for kids, a jumping castle, leather stamping and face painting,” Lyle said.

"And if kids would like to dress up in heritage clothes, they are welcome to.

"We make all the traditional horse products like saddles and gear plus we make a lot of diary covers and belts. I suppose we'd like to think we continue the heritage with lots of hand-made products and that kind of thing.”

"Most of the proceeds from the sales will be going to charities including Chaplaincy and Samaritan's Purse Christmas Shoe Boxes,” Helen said.

"We really wanted to make it a community event, a fun-filled event with proceeds going to the different charities.”
