Fake $50s accused in Hervey Bay court for the first time

THE man accused of using counterfeit money in Hervey Bay has appeared in court for the first time since being arrested.

Jonathan Robert Eldridge appeared in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court, facing charges of possessing and using fake $50 bills.

Duty solicitor John Milburn attempted to remove a condition on Mr Eldridge's bail that makes him report to the police station twice a week.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Nicole Kunkel objected to this proposed change.

Snr Const Kunkel said Eldridge had a criminal history in Victoria, and said there was a genuine concern that Mr Eldridge could leave the Fraser Coast without the requirement to show up in person at the police station.

Magistrate Graeme Tatnell agreed with Snr Const Kunkel and kept the reporting conditions in place, before adjourning the case to March 7.

Earlier, Mr Tatnell expressed concern that charges relating to counterfeit money would fall under Commonwealth jurisdiction, rather than that of the Magistrates Court.

Snr Const Kunkel said the case could be heard in either jurisdiction.

Eldridge asked for the adjournment so he could seek legal advice.
