Extra cash for Mackay show

STATE Government funding of more than $58,000 will keep crowds rolling up to the Mackay Show.

Part of a $2million statewide budget commitment, the grant was made to Mackay and District Agricultural, Pastoral and Industrial Association through the Show Societies Grants Program.

Mackay Show manager Steve Gavioli welcomed the funding, which he said would be spent on showgrounds upkeep.

"It's a very expensive exercise putting on a show every year, it's well attended by the community (but) it's not something you can do at the drop of a hat,” he said.

"The state government's support for us has been very well appreciated by the committee and everyone involved with the show.”

This year's show attracted 29,760 visitors over the three days, which was about 900 up on last year. "With the number of people who have left town, we're still seeing the same sort of numbers through the gates, which is very good to see,” he said.

Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert also welcomed the funding for one of the most important events on the calendar.
