Expand wireless coverage for regions: review

THE National Broadband Network's planned fixed wireless network should be expanded to include more regional areas, a key review has urged.

A report from the triennial review of regional telecommunications was tabled in Federal Parliament last week.

It has urged the NBN Co to extend the fixed wireless "where practicable" as a substitute for satellite coverage.

The review also recommended the Commonwealth work with state governments and networks to upgrade public safety wireless networks and improve mobile phone coverage in rural areas.

It also made a raft of recommendations to improve mobile phone and standard telephone service prices, infrastructure and consumer standards for regional Australia.

A spokeswoman for Communications Minister Mitch Fifield said the government was "carefully considering" the report.
