FACE of the carnival Elyan Shotbolt is predicting the trends at this year's event to be colour-blocking, vintage- inspired dresses and lovely big hats.

As a judge in the Fashions on the Field and the winner of last year's competition, Elyan's hints to win over her and the other judges will be helpful in walking away with the major prizes on the day.

"It is not all about fashion or the outfit you wear when it comes down to style," she said. "Deportment and elegance go a long way in making an outfit look great.

"If you have a simple dress you can team it with patterned hosiery and gloves and you have a great ensemble.

"It is the finishing touches and details on items that draw my attention."

Pain for beauty is a big no-no for Elyan at any race carnival. She hopes that racegoers opt for weather appropriate clothing and shoes they can last the day in.

"It looks terrible when you see girls shivering from their short skirts and strapless tops, dress for the weather and don't fling your high heels over your shoulder. Comfort and confidence is always the way to go."
