Eco Barge stands to clean up Airlie

ECO Barge volunteers removed 170kg of garbage from the Airlie Beach streets two weeks ago.

The mammoth clean up effort covered PCYC, Port of Airlie, Airlie Markets and the Coral Sea Resort.

Project co-ordinator Fiona Broadbent said she hoped to see less rubbish in the future.

"During the clean-ups the top items found were beer bottles, plastic cups, water bottles, cigarette butts and plastic bags,” she said.

"All this litter will eventually become marine debris if it is not removed from the streets and creeks.

"Just put it in the bin, it's not like we have a shortage of public bins in the area.”

Eco Barge partner Cruise Whitsundays played a supportive role funding the clean up effort.

CEO Nick Hortle said he was proud to be a part of the solution to a problem.

"We are a big supporter of Eco Barge's continual efforts to keep our local marine environment free from debris,” he said.

"This is yet another wonderful project that we have partnered with them on, with great results for our environment.”

Over 153 tonnes of marine debris has been removed since Eco Barge was launched in 2009.
