EASTERNWELL has secured a new $30 million contract with Santos for the supply of heavy workover services in the Cooper Basin.

The two-year contract commences late this year and includes two one year extension options.

Easternwell has worked with Santos for more than 20 years.

As with previous contracts, Easternwell will manage the new rig build from its Toowoomba workshop utilising local and regional supplier relationships built up over many years.

Expected spend with local and regional suppliers is likely to be about $4 million.

"As well as providing workover services on conventional gas wells, we will have the opportunity to potentially use this rig in upcoming shale operations," Easternwell chief operating officer Darren Greer said.

"This would be a natural and exciting progression for us as we have substantial experience in the conventional and non-conventional coal seam gas industry which puts us in a good position to deliver for Santos."

The rig will operate 24 hours so Easternwell will commence hiring experienced crews from June 2013 allowing plenty of time for in-house training and development through the company's Registered Training Organisation.

Positions will include rig managers, drillers and floorhands.
