WATCH: Two humpback whales spotted in Gladstone harbour in rare sighting
IT'S not every day you see a whale in the Gladstone harbour, let alone two.
But Gladstone resident Adam Balkin snapped a photograph and video showing exactly that.
The video shows two humpback whales frolicking in the harbour as residents watch in awe.
Chasing warmer waters during winter times to breed, it's likely these whales will head south to colder waters in spring for better feeding opportunities.
According to the GPC's Big6 education and awareness of iconic species program, Gladstone waters are known to be a popular habitat for the humpback whale.
Humpback whales can grow up to 15m in length and can weigh up to 30 to 40 tonnes.
These gentle giants usually have black colouration on their upper-body surfaces, with white areas on the belly, under their long pectoral fins, and on the underside of their tail (flukes).
These unique black and white markings are like fingerprints. No two humpback whales are exactly the same.
