Drought over as Andorra earns a draw

FOOTBALL: It was a long-time between drinks but Andorra has finally broken its sequence of 58 consecutive defeats.

An 11-year spell of losing every game was finally ended with a 0-0 stalemate against fellow minnow Faroe Islands in a qualifier for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

It was the first point in qualifying for the tiny principality high up in the Pyrenees mountains with a population 80,000, since a scoreless draw with Finland in 2005.

The Faroe Islands, which has a similar record in world football, finished with 10 men after Joan Edmundsson was booked a second time with 15 minutes to play.

Andorra's competitive record now comprises one win, three draws and 96 defeats, with a goal difference of minus 285.

There had been just one meeting between the two teams before this game and that friendly match ended 0-0 in 1999.
