The cab and the first trailer were found on their side on the edge of the bridge while the B trailer dangled over the river below.

Heavy haulage driver and witness Danny Mathers who was one of the first on the scene said the B-Trailer was left swinging for some time before the flames caused it to crash below.

"I was coming out of Marulan and I spotted a column of black smoke ahead, literally 30 seconds before I got to it," he said.

"The B-Trailer snapped as the heat got to it and fell underneath, after it dropped it kept burning below.

"How he escaped has got me knackered.

Traffic has been stopped on the Hume Highway for over an hour.

The driver was taken to the Bowral District Hospital. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The fire was extinguished by Fire & Rescue NSW, however the truck was completed destroyed.

All southbound lanes of the Hume Motorway have reopened in Berrima after a truck crash and fire at Wingecarribee Bridge.

Northbound lanes remain closed as the clean-up and vehicle salvage operation continues.   The safety barrier has been damaged so repairs will need to be carried out.

Northbound traffic is still being diverted via the Old Hume Highway through Berrima and Mittagong.

Motorists are advised to allow plenty of extra travel time on the diversion route.
