This driver is being hailed a hero after avoiding crash

HEART-STOPPING footage has emerged of a car driver who fell asleep at the wheel and went over the wrong side of the road, narrowly missing a truck.

That truck belonged to Blenners Transport and was being driven by driver David O'Docherty, who has since been praised by a very grateful husband and father for "saving the life of his wife and children".

The caller's wife was travelling behind the car driver, who crossed into the wrong side of the road. The car driver was found after the event, parked at a nearby servo, fast asleep with his young children in the car.

David told The Cairns Post that the incident, which occurred at on the Bruce Highway at Maryborough, brought back awful memories of a near-fatal accident he witnessed in 1997.

"My first thought was, 'F*%^!'. I was just cruising along and I was actually talking to a mate of mine from Melbourne on the hands-free, then I saw this thing starting to come at me," he said.

"I just looked and thought, 'this is going to hurt'. I knew he wasn't going to go under the front of me but thought he'd go under the back trailer.

"It was close. I carried on with the rest of my day, I spoke to my wife about it."

In a statement on Facebook, Blenners Transport said, "David's calm and highly professional reaction stopped a catastrophic and likely fatal accident".

"We know that this is just one of many incidents that our drivers face everyday on the roads, most of which are never mentioned, so on behalf of team at Blenners Transport, we wish to express our gratitude to David and all Blenners Drivers for your ongoing professionalism and care -you do us proud!"
