Donations make wedding a reality

A BUNDAMBA couple forced to live in an overcrowded garage following the floods has been able to tie the knot thanks to the kindness of a generous flood support group.

Brad and Nikki Fechner had given up all hope of going ahead with their wedding after January's disaster turned their lives upside down.

Forced to share a shed with 12 family members, the planned wedding seemed like a far-off dream until the Bundamba Flood Support Group stepped in.

After the Bundamba support group nominated the couple for assistance, The Heart Army covered thousands of dollars in costs – from invitations to flowers to photos and even the wedding rings – so that the union could go ahead at Queens Park on Saturday.

Mrs Fechner, 25, said she was left speechless when she found out she would be able to marry her partner of two years.

“All we could think was, ‘Why not? We've been given this opportunity so we may as well go through with it',” she said.

“The generosity that people showed us was just gobsmacking – unbelievable.”

Flood support committee member Dianne Dimitrov said she had been inspired by Mr and Mrs Fechner's excitement and clear commitment to one another and their community.

All the wedding suppliers were from the Ipswich area, including the wedding rings by Ipswich designer Yung Tang, decorations supplied by KnK Wedding Supplies, Miss Nena Rose and Wholesale Wedding Supplies.

Two Ipswich families donated collector's edition Mustangs so the bridal party could arrive in style.

Mayor Paul Pisasale attended the wedding, while Cr Trevor Nardi paid a visit to the bridal luncheon. After the ceremony the couple and their 100 guests were treated to a reception at the Ipswich Metropole Hotel.

“The wedding went really well – and thankfully we had beautiful sunny weather,” Mrs Fechner said.

The newlyweds will enjoy a honeymoon in Brisbane before returning to their new rental house.
