Do your school supply sums

YOU'VE survived the Christmas craze - but for those with children the back-to-school frenzy is in full swing.

Having your children school-ready can be a costly affair - in both time and money.

This time last year Amanda Budde spent nearly $1000 on all the necessary back-to-school items for her two children, Hannah, 11, and Isaac, 9, who attend Marian Primary School.

Mrs Budde said she takes an inventory of all the leftover school items at the end of the year.

"I hold on to anything that we might be able to re-use," she said.

"And we don't buy everything new every year."

Much of the money was spent on text books, uniforms and shoes, Mrs Budde said, so where possible, she reuses.

"The kids aren't getting new uniforms this year," she said.

"They understand the value of things."

The longevity of uniforms and school shoes came down to a little TLC, she said.

Buying quality brand names could help save in the long run, especially for items such as calculators or compass sets, because the items could last for years, Mrs Budde said.

"We try to get the brands the school asks for because they do last longer," she said.

Budgeting back-to-school costs into your annual finances would also ensure you weren't left out of pocket, especially if you had overspent at Christmas, she said.
