Do you want Uber in Mackay? Readers divided
WE asked readers on social media if they want Uber in Mackay.
See what they said:
Kathryn Ferguson: Used Uber in Brisbane, spotless cars, offered minties, bottled water & so much cheaper! You also rate each ride so if the car stinks of cigarettes or the driver is rude, you get listened to! Bring it to Mackay.
Georgina Keane: Absolutely!
Kathryn Ferguson: Oh & also cashless so it goes directly on your credit card & no 10% surcharge for using your card!!!
Joel Bearham: And the driver gets to rate their passenger, great to weed out idiots. No cash either so less likely for robberies.
Sam Reddrop: Pretty sure all the profits don't go to Uber, the driver gets 80% and Uber get 20%. So wouldn't this create local jobs for people that can't afford a taxi license or break into a market that has no competition. Taxi company's are shitting themselves because they've had no competition for so long.
Kenneth Spud: Tate Mackay taxis have had it too good for long enough...ridiculously expensive especially at night and robbing people who have had too much to drink. Bring on the competition...it has to be a good thing.
Mitchell Pollock: Uber is the superior service. If they aren't, the taxi industry don't need to be worrying about them. Ubers are cheaper, the drivers are friendlier and the cars are definitely kept in better condition. Also, insurers now have specific policies for Uber drivers so bagging them on the basis that the drivers are uninsurable, is incorrect. Competition is always good for the consumer.
Robert Fordyce: I don't want my girls riding home in a car where the driver has had no screening or background checks. Anyone can sign up for über. Think about it before you put people at risk.
Caitlin Barry: If taxis weren't so dam expensive and always tried to take the long way home it wouldn't be to bad but until then he'll yer bring it in.
Kristen Michelmore: It used to cost me $60-$70 to get home during the "boom" now it costs $27 from the cbd which is what is was before the boom. Taxis are definitely more affordable and available now so there's no real need for them but having said that competition is always a good thing for the consumer so I think it should be allowed to come to Mackay. Eddie Higgins Bring on the competition. Most taxi drivers are rude an useless behind the wheel, that's if they even speak English. Don't get me started on knowing where a suburb or street is, without a GPS they would be lost.
Amanda Pelagalli: It's the same innovative technology and business model that is being used to revolutionise many different industries all over the world, AirBnB in the accommodation industry is another example. Some people won't like it and use other services but that doesn't mean it should not be here. It's still local people that work as uber drivers so if anything it may help the unemployment rate. Look at what other countries are doing, in Canada when taxi companies are slow, they plug into the uber technology and use it too. Perhaps the fight should actually be against the high licensing fees paid to the Government to operate a taxi business and not with uber......
Helen Allwood: Wouldn't use them if I was desperate, taking money from local taxi owners who have to meet so many gov standards which uber drivers don't. Will mean the end of the wheelchair taxi. Because taxi owners won't renew their licenses
Kim James Smyth: NO WAY!!! spare a thought for those who own a taxi - they have to pay thousands of $$ in fees to government and Insurance. Uber comes along and doesn't have to pay a thing.....................NOR do they have insurance to cover you if you are in their car in an accident.
Nicholas Frampton: No way, keep 'em out. All Uber, AirBnB and the like do is contribute to the casualisation of the workforce. Markets and competition ultimately lead to a race to the bottom. The local taxi service should either be in public hands or operate as a worker self-directed co-operative.
Nicole Ribaldone: Totes think Uber should come to Mackay. Far more affordable, more accountable and competitive. Taxi drivers, whether competing with Uber or not are rude and completely overcharge. Bring on some fair competition on all levels!!!'
Tahnee Armstrong: To me, the money hasnt been an issue. Its the service or lack there of! I was just in melbourne for 6 days and used Uber each time and will never use a taxi in the cities again! They are friendly, clean and helpful!
Sandra McNamara: I havent used Uber but I will certainly consider it. I paid $17 one way and $20 back for a trip that was 4.6 km and should take 8 mins according to google. I realise that the taxis pay $2 each time they go to the airport - charged by the airport and taxi charges the customer - but I thought it was a bit much.
Cameron Macklin: 100% for it, Taxi owners here are questionable and on two occasions drivers have taken advantage of myself/friends I know when they're drunk and charged $80 for a CBD to Eimeo fare.
Aiden Hawkins: Never had a bad experience with uber, used it every year travelling to and from areas in Brisbane when down for work training at weeks at a time. They ask you which way you want to go instead of taking the long way, there not rude like most other taxi drivers, cheaper, friendlier, by far the better service. Bring uber to Mackay, could allow more jobs for locals as well.
Wayne Prince: if uber uses drivers that can speak english and can be understood who have an idea of where they are going and not be so rude i think they will do well.
Michael Whitten: I grew up in Mackay. Been in Melbourne since 1996. Uber is one of the best initiatives to happen to any city. I came home tonight in one. I thoroughly recommend it for Mackay.
Raeleen Etelaaho: We want Sizzler..we want a water park...we want a stadium. .we want Myer..the cry goes up..the service comes..the public don't support...and it falls over..
