Dive deep into layers of clouds at Warwick Art Gallery

WARWICK Art Gallery is proud to present an exhibition by Scotland born and Toowoomba- based artist Charlie Boyle from late February.

Charlie moved to Australia in the 1980s to teach painting in the early years of the University of Southern Queensland.

The multi-award-winning, internationally recognised artist devotes considerable time to his art practice, which has been continuous and is extensive.

A prolific painter, printmaker and sculptor, Charlie creates paintings that invite the viewer to dive deep into the layers of clouds and skyscapes, predominant features in his work.

The paintings selected for the exhib ition called Elements range in size and each one demonstrates Charlie's mastery of colour and enjoyment of the painting process.

Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine and gallery assistant Loretta Grayson are both former students of Charlie's so it is a unique and special opportunity for them to work on presenting this exhibition in Warwick.

"Charlie has inspired so many young students over the years,” said Ms Devine.

"I recall Charlie sharing his admiration for artists such as John Constable and William Turner with so much passion and enthusiasm during his lectures.

"He was a quiet and dedicated teacher and also an artist who took his own studio work very seriously.

"I consider those years as an art student as some of the best years of my life.”

In addition to the collection of large and small oil paintings, Charlie has loaned the gallery his sketch books and visual diaries for a deeper insight into his process.

Many of the works in the exhibition feature familiar local landscapes including Warwick, Stanthorpe and Clifton.

Potters taken out of their comfort zone

LATE last year Warwick Potters Association welcomed Maleny artist Janna Pameijer to its studio to teach techniques in large clay sculpture.

Janna is well known for her large-scale works as well as her European and Moroccan art tours.

The students enthusiastically embraced the new technique and their efforts will be on display in the new Orange Wall Gallery at Warwick Art Gallery.

Lovers of ceramics are in for a special treat with some of Janna's works also featuring in the exhibition, called Clay Community Collective.

Local artists featuring in the exhibition include Penny King, Kerrie Rubie, Raye Batham, Robert Cullen and Sue Keong.

Elements and Clay Community Collective opened on Thursday, and will continue until Saturday, March 24.

The gallery is open 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
