Digital telly disappointment

FAY and Bruce McCamley have always had bad television reception and a minimal number of channels, but to their surprise the arrival of the digital switchover hasn't made much difference.

Fay, from Bajool, is not the only householder in the region suffering from the digital switchover but said she's never had the best TV reception.

"Before the switch we only ever had the ABC channel and WIN," the 74-year-old said yesterday.

"Because we're tucked into the bottom of Mt Hopeful and there's also a hill which blocks the reception, we're in a bit of a blackspot.

"Our only option is a satellite because we're not eligible for Centrelink assistance, which means we would have to pay between $600 and $1000 for a satellite dish."

But for many others, the transition from analogue to digital hasn't gone as smoothly as Bluff resident Jeff Latchford experienced.

"When we had analogue, our Channel 10 was a bit fuzzy but now even if we get a bit of rain it's all pixelated and unwatchable even with an antenna and booster installed by a qualified technician," Jeff said.

The Digital Taskforce Team said yesterday those in the McCamley's situation could get the government's Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) service for those with television reception difficulties. The Digital Taskforce Team said yesterday about 105 calls had been from residents in the Capricornia switchover area.

Most of the total calls received from regional Queensland related to the Government's Household Assistance Scheme.

Other calls have related to general switchover, including the timeline and areas of switchover, the Government's Viewer Access Satellite Television service and reception queries.

The Morning Bulletin is seeking a response from the Digital Switchover Taskforce about the McCamley situation.
