DESPITE a difficult final round Emma de Groot has had a successful debut on the USLPGA Futures tour.
Playing the Florida's Natural Charity Classic at The Lake Region Yacht and Country club, de Groot - a former Coffs Harbour junior - showed glimpses of the form that made her a standout on the US college circuit with the University of Chattanooga.
De Groot birdied five of the first six holes in the second round but struggled to maintain that form over the back nine to finish the day with a 2-under 70 to make the cut for the final round
Blustery conditions made it hard for all competitors on the final day with only 12 ladies managing to break par.
The 23 year-old bogeyed the last two holes to finish with a final round of 6-over 78.
Although struggling in the final round, de Groot still finished in a six-way tie for 58th.
The final round was summed up succinctly on Twitter by the local girl when she said: "Golf is hard".
The event was won by American Megan McChrystal who's second round 66 gave her enough of lead to claim victory even after a less than impressive final round 72.
De Groot's next tournament is set to be the Sara Hinds Classic in Sarasota Florida at the end of April.
There to support de Groot along her journey towards hopefully a tour card in the prestigious USLPGA is her brother Matt, who has signed on as her caddy for the year ahead.
