Derryn Hinch sacked
SHOCK jock Derryn Hinch has been sacked by Melbourne radio station 3AW.
The man known as the Human Headline broke the news on Twitter on Monday night shortly after finishing his 4-6pm drive stint.
"Is this a newsflash? I've just been fired," Mr Hinch tweeted.
The tweet was immediately followed with: "As somebody once said. That's life. Watch this space."
Hours later he posted: "Thanks all for tweets and text msgs. Funny thing: They hire me for who I am and what I say. And fire me for who I am and what I say."
3AW revealed news of the sacking on its website shortly before Mr Hinch took to Twitter.
The station is expected to announce a replacement for Mr Hinch in the coming days.
Mr Hinch, whose one-year contract with 3AW expires at the end of the year, later posted on his Human Headline blog that he "didn't see it coming".
"I asked why and was told by the GM Shane Healy that they planned to 'take the station in a different direction'.
Seeing my program is No. I on Melbourne I'm tempted to think that direction is down," Mr Hinch wrote.
"I am in shock. Didn't see it coming. But had heard five weeks ago that my occasional fill-in Tom Elliott had told people at Channel Ten that this was my last year and he was replacing me. Fairly prescient. I wish him luck.
"Tonight's irony was not lost on me. I'd just come off air after doing one of the best interviews in years. An exclusive with Buzz Aldrin. Ah well, that's life."
Mr Hinch indicated he planned to see out his contract and would contemplate his next move when he goes on two weeks' leave from Wednesday.
Last year he was off the air while he recovered from a liver transplant and served a sentence of five months home detention for revealing the identity of a sex offender.
