Daron's favourite load is potatoes

"I'M CARTING potatoes from Cressy to Ulverstone at the moment,” Daron Steel, from Carrick, said when we caught up with him grabbing a hot bite to eat and a hot cuppa at the Caltex at Sassafras.

He was driving his Steel Transport 2018 Scania G-500 and towing a potato bin at the time.

"I've been doing this for five months now,” he said, "but I have been working in the family business since I was 19 or 20, a lifetime in fact, doing livestock and gravel carting, all sorts of things and a heap of variety.

"Now days it's all potatoes, from pretty well the Smithton area to everywhere. I am really enjoying carting spuds, to me it's a cushy job, unlike carting cattle for example!”

Asked about time off, he replied: "Time off? What's that? When I'm not doing maintenance I am renovating the house, though we do try to take the caravan out and head north to the sunshine in winters, every now and then!”
