Dalby bowler earns silver in State comp

BOWLS: The Queensland Maroon Arm Bowlers have again held a state competition for bowlers who use the "dreaded” extended arm.

From Saturday, April 27, to Wednesday, May 1 games were held at Musgrave Hill Bowls Club, on the Gold Coast.

Dalby was again represented by three bowlers.

Wendy and Gordon Usher contested the pairs but were eliminated on the first day after three hard games in their sectional.

John McGahan was teamed up with Leon Dwyer, from Pialba Bowls Club, and played towards a sectional win on the Saturday.

On Monday, April 29, McGahan and Dwyer were looking at two more exacting games but were at their best from the start, in the quarter- final defeating Vicki and Allan Cameron, 32-9. The semi-final against David Johnson and Alan Eversham was tight but resulted in a win for John and Leon 20-16.

The final game, playing for gold or silver, was held on Wednesday, May 1 against Marinus De Kleyn and Jeff Twist.

Although McGahan and Dwyer were unable to break the winning ends if their opponents, there was no disgrace in a score line of 14-16 over 21 ends and silver is always welcome.

The next nationals squad has been chosen and Dalby will again have three representatives: Wendy and Gordon Usher and John McGahan.

Dalby Bowls Club will hold its Arm Bowlers' Day on June 23 and with a prize pool of $3600 it should prove to be a success.
