EDITORIAL: It's D-Day for the Queensland Times online
AS a newspaper industry veteran I have seen many changes in the way the news is delivered.
Like many journalists of my era I started work in the newsroom as a copy boy.
My job was to take the just-typed stories from the journalists to the sub editors to review before handing them to the compositors to imprint on hot metal.
The finished page would then be turned into a negative and burnt onto a printing plate which would be attached to the rollers on the giant press.
Hours would be involved in the process of making a paper.
Of course little of this news could be consumed by the general public until the paper hit the streets the next day.
Fast forward 30-plus years and the QT news team you see above can now deliver the latest breaking news in just seconds to the phone you are carrying in your pocket.
We are still as committed as ever to bringing you a great print edition as we have been for the past 153 years. It's just now that commitment extends to also giving you the best online coverage we can.
As of today we are offering a digital subscription package for this service - and what an offer it is.
Rest assured this new package will have no impact on your daily paper, it is all about us heeding the call from those who want to read their news as soon as possible online.
If you occasionally pop into the QT website you'll still be able to do this and it won't cost you a cent. The packages we have put together are without doubt the best that have been offered anywhere in this country.
They include opportunities to have a digital subscription coupled with getting the paper delivered six days a week or even just on a Saturday.
