THE Mackay Demand Policing Unit is designed as a proactive policing unit that will focus on intelligence and early identification of the problem areas in the region.

Mackay Police Station officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Craig Sanderson said the unit's six-month trial began yesterday.

"It's an exciting time for us within the Mackay district… to be innovative with regards to how we go about our business," Snr Sgt Sanderson said.

"We're just trying to re-energize what we're doing and working out if we're working efficiently with what we're trying to achieve… is there something we can do better to serve the community."

The aim of this new unit is to provide high police visibility in the problem areas, early intervention and identification of active offenders and enforcement.

Snr Sgt Sanderson said the new unit was comprised of 30 officers ranging in rank from constable to senior sergeant.

"The Mackay Tactical Crime Squad forms a major component of it," he said.

"This has been evolved into more of an intelligence-based response and specific tasking of those officers into our peak times."

Burglary and break and enters won't be the only focus.

The unit has a "high fluid design for a quick response" and would be involved in wherever there are multiple calls for police service ... even traffic-related complaint areas, Snr Sgt Sanderson said.

The unit taskforce was the product of several months preparation, he said.

"We've been… looking at our models around the state, interstate and internationally with regards to how other police services utilise their available resources.

"There's been no increase in police numbers in the area. We're utilising our resources for a best fit and most efficient purpose," Snr Sgt Sanderson said.
