SOCCER: Several Central Queensland teams will take part in the Football Queensland Community Cup in Mackay, which starts tomorrow.

The best players from CQ will field the boys' under-16, U15, U14, U13 and U12 and there will also be an U15 girl's team.

CQ U15 boy's coach Darryl Edgerton said preparations had been solid ahead of the week-long competition, which will include National Premier League teams Far North Queensland FC Heat, North Queensland United and Magpies Crusaders United.

"We have trained for two months and have trained really well," he said.

"Todd Longden has been one of the stand-outs and is the captain.

"We've got boys like Scott Skinner who is a striker (Biloela), Matt Marshall who plays at left wing (Central) and Bluebirds' Jeremy McMahon."

The teams will play seven matches across the week-long competition.

"It's all about development because there will be talent identification scouts there looking for players for the advanced program," Edgerton said.

Marshall said it was all about development as a team.

"The realistic goal is to learn to play as a team and to be able to perform at a higher level," he said.

Marshall enjoys the left-wing position because it offers a variety of roles.

"Running is a part of my game and the left-wing position gives me the chance to either assist or score a goal," he said.

CQ U14 coach Bill Webb said it would be a great test to see where his team was at.

"It's a good chance to measure ourselves and we do have some good players and a chance for them to get exposure," he said.

Late last year Football Queensland announced the FQ Community Cup would start in mid-2018 and act as a talent identification opportunity for young footballers outside of the advanced player pathway.
