CQ girl hoping to turn The Voice red chairs tomorrow
MUSIC is in Brooke Schubert's blood.
"My mum sings and gigs and my aunty was an opera singer and travelled around the world for years," the 30-year-old Moranbah singer said.
"It's definitely in my blood and it was never a question of, 'is Brooke going to sing'. It's just one of those things...
"It was always there. I've been gigging in clubs and pubs ever since I could get into them legally."
Schubert, who has performed extensively across the region, and nationally with Keith Urban, said her music career had been like an apprenticeship.
Schubert first took the stage with the Kasey Chambers family band, The Dead Ringer Band at just nine years of age and said Chambers had been a friend and inspiration ever since.
"It's really cool to have seen her career flourish and then sort of look up to her and hope and work towards a career doing the same thing, hopefully," she said.
She also admires how the country star juggles motherhood and life on the road, something she hopes to learn from as mother to Jonah, 4, and Jeremiah, 2
Chambers is not the only country star Schubert has performed with. After posting a video to Youtube imploring Keith Urban to let her join him on stage during his 2014 Australia tour, she was surprised to get a call.
"I did the video and I was very tongue in cheek, very dry north Queensland sense of humour which is absolutely me to a tee," she said.
She was shocked when he called her and invited her to sing a duet with him at his Townsville show.
"He's just so down to earth and it was just a really really beautiful show," Brooke said.
"We finished the Townsville show and the next day I emailed him and said, 'look thanks so much for the opportunity,' and here's my sense of humour coming in, it's so stupid, I said to him, 'oh look, if you want anyone else to sing that song with you for the rest of the tour, just give me a yell, I'm totally free'.
She wasn't. She had a string of weddings booked to sing at, but to her surprise Urban called again and asked her to do six more shows together in Brisbane, Sydney in Melbourne.
The star even arranged for her to be flown home in between gigs to spend time with her husband Christian and Jonah.
"I only had one baby at that time. Jeremiah is a tour baby, he was conceived on tour," she said, laughing.
Schubert is hoping her experience behind the microphone will help her turn the judges' chairs when she auditions for The Voice judges on Sunday night.
She said the show was an opportunity "you've just got to take with both hands" and she was excited to be among a host of talented singers to try their luck on the stage.
The Voice airs on Channel Nine, on Sunday night at 7pm.
