The countdown is on for Game of Thrones fans

THE highly anticipated sixth season of Game of Thrones will premiere on Foxtel's Showcase channel on Anzac Day.

The April 25 public holiday will see many Game of Thrones fans able to watch the first episode at the same time as it airs in the US, 11am AEST.

Season six will see the return of character Bran Stark, played by Isaac Hempstead Wright, and Australian actress Essie Davis joins the cast as a traveling theatre performer who pokes fun at Queen Cersei.

Fan favourite Jon Snow is also confirmed to return after actor Kit Harrington was spotted on set in Northern Ireland.

Season five ended on Snow getting stabbed and left for dead by his brothers in the Night's Watch.

Game of Thrones season six premieres on Foxtel's Showcase channel on Monday April 25 at 11am.
