Council's festive spirit lacking

IT is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas . . . unless, of course you live in Toowoomba that is.

With only 19 sleeps remaining, the CBD is looking less and less festive each year, according to Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce president Geoff McDonald.

"In past years, Christmas was massive in Toowoomba, but sadly decorating the city has fallen by the wayside of late.

"Certainly, the main street does not look all that flash during the day," he said.

Mr McDonald said that while it had been a tough year on businesses, one has to ask the question of Toowoomba Regional Council "where have the decorations and festive spirit gone?"

"Christmas is the time of year to bring joy and happiness to the community," Mr McDonald said.

"Maybe they lost some decorations in the floods. Who knows?" he said.

With the Toowoomba Town Hall on Ruthven St currently looking a bit dreary, Mr McDonald has urged businesses to get into the festive mood.

"It would be great to see businesses on the main street dress up their windows like they did in previous years. It would be nice to see that return," he said.

Toowoomba Regional Tourism, Events and Parks Services portfolio spokesman Councillor Joe Ramia said hopefully the decorations would be up in due course.

"I know they used a lot of the decorations over the weekend at the Mayoral Carols, but hopefully they will be up sometime over the next week," Cr Ramia said.

"I honestly believe that the City Hall, and the city itself, needs to be decked out nicely for Christmas. Especially after the year that we have had," he said.
