GLADSTONE residents and businesses are being priced out of using the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre.

This month a funding request for $10,000 from Gladstone Engineering Alliance for their annual conference was knocked back by Gladstone Regional Council.

The decision was made by community events portfolio holder Ren Lanzon, who said the GEA events were backed by businesses and therefore would be likely to go ahead regardless.

GEA project officer Kim Roberts said the funding request was to pay for hire of the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre.

She said the conference might have to be moved back to CQ University, where it was held for 10 years up until last year when construction of the entertainment centre was finished.

"We used the GECC in 2014 for our event. It is a fantastic community building," Ms Roberts said.

The conference draws representatives from 140 companies across Australia, but most of those are from the Gladstone region.

Last week councillors also decided $10,000 for the Botanic to Bridge marathon run (which returns $50,000 to the local community every year) would not be funded either.
