Cooroy kids talk Mother's Day
WITH Mother's Day just around the corner, Finda's Alexia Purcell and Kieran Campbell visited Cooroy State Primary School's class 2K on Thursday 29 April, 2010 to discuss Mother's Day, it's history and what it means to them.
After being shown a short presentation on the history of Mother's Day, Finda asked the students of class 2K four questions:
- What do you think is the purpose of Mother's Day?
- What does Mother's Day mean to you?
- What do you like to do for your mum on Mother's Day?
- What do you think makes mums so special?
Here is what they said:
What do you think is the purpose of Mother's Day?
One student said, "Mother's Day is about being nice to mothers."
"It's about caring for mothers and showing your mum you love her," another said.
"Mother's Day is about thanking your mum."
"Mother's Day is when you help your mum," one student said.
When asked what they do on Mother's Day to help their mums another said, "I vacuum my room."
"I do the dishes and make my bed."
What does Mother's Day mean to you?
For the students of 2K, Mother's Day means feeling good about spoiling mum.
One student said, "For me it is feeling good."
"It means feeling happy and giving hugs," another said.
What do you like to do for your mum on Mother's Day?
While all of the students in 2K like to do something different for their mum on Mother's Day, none of them spoke of bought presents but rather handmade cards, breakfast in bed and affection.
"I like to make my mum cups of green tea."
"I like to make my mum a love heart card," a student said.
"On Mother's Day I help my mum cross the road."
Another student said, "I like to play soccer with my mum on Mother's Day."
"I paint my mum a painting."
"I give my mum lots of kisses and cuddles on Mother's Day."
What do you think makes mums so special?
When first asked what makes their mums so special this was a few of 2K's answers:
"Because she gives me treats in the afternoon," one student said.
"Because she takes me to this place that has a train and I can eat sushi."
"Because she lets me watch TV and play on the computer."
But later, after they were asked to really think about what makes their mum special, the answers were much more detailed:
Lachlan Robinson said, "Because she loves me and always lets me go on the top bunk."
"Because she's a great cook. She's funny. She packs my lunchbox and she takes us swimming," Shallbe MacKenzie said.
Dylan Randall said, "My mum takes me crabbing and fishing. And she lets me ride her horse."
"Because she bakes gingerbread and cookies and she teaches me stuff," Asher Bolge said.
