Cooper XI mentor doing well after sudden illness

CRICKET: A mild stroke won't keep a good man down - it just cost him the chance to watch one game of cricket.

Retired Queensland wicketkeeper Lew Cooper has organised an annual cricket match between the Cooper XI and Maryvale for the past four years.

But shortly after he turned 80, Cooper suffered a stroke and didn't make it to the game last weekend. Captain Mark Gaskell finalised the team.

"I have just been to the doctor again and am making a great recovery from the stroke, I am pretty lucky,” Cooper said.

"I gather the game went well and I will back for next year's game.”

The Cooper XI made 6-217 off 45 overs with Steve Baker, 43, and Lee Watts, 40, the best with the bat.

Maryvale replied with 7-221 in 34.4 overs to win.

Michael Bourke, 44, Scott McLennan, 42, and Jason Steketee, 40, all reached the compulsory retirement score of 40.

Scott McLennan (Maryvale), Andy Manion and Dom Santer (Cooper XI) each took two wickets and Darren Santer (Cooper XI) took three catches.

It is now two wins to each team in the four fixtures played.
