Controversy surrounding Coles branded free-range eggs
RECENT controversy surrounding Coles branded free-range eggs has had some customers crying foul.
The supermarket giant recently moved to make their entire line of name-branded eggs free-range, but with 10,000 hens per hectare - they have been accused of using the term loosely.
RSPCA scientific officer for farm animals Melina Tensen said while the guidelines recommended 1500 hens per hectare for free-range eggs, 10,000 was much better than caged hens.
While the term free-range often invoked images of chickens roaming in a big green field the fact was some free-range farmers stocked more than 20,000 hens per hectare.
"We'd like to see brand owners being transparent on packaging," Ms Tensen said. "Free-range doesn't necessarily mean good welfare."

Nikki McWhinney Nope, I buy cheap eggs that state they are cage laid eggs. I'm not overly concerned about the chickens. Just as I am not concerned about the meat birds I eat or the cows, pigs etc.
