Consistency in refereeing heads the agenda at the Ants Nest

RUGBY UNION: Regional rugby players will no longer throw their hands in the air in confusion after a referee blows the whistle.

With the ever changing rules of Rugby Union - Darling Downs Rugby, Australian Rugby Union and Qld Rugby Union have hit the country road to stamp out common infringements and secure consistency in refereeing across the board.

Roma Echidnas Rugby Union Club hosted the coaching panel on Tuesday night, taking away with them valuable insight into the legislation of the game.

Darling Downs Rugby general manager Matt Hammond said the session in Roma went really well.

"The players were very receptive to what Rowan Hoffman from Rugby ARU, who has 38 Super 14 matches under his belt, was talking about with refereeing,” Hammond said.

"They took really valuable insight into the breakdown and any particular areas where they have been penalised heavily.”

Hammond said it was quite rare to see someone of such high calibre in the refereeing sphere that could really assist the regional clubs, which was brilliant.

"The initiative actually came from Ben Gardiner the president of St George Frillnecks who requested that we come out and we managed to get to Roma as well,” Hammond said.

"In 2018 there was about eight major changes in the laws of the game, so it's really important that we get that message out to the clubs, especially regionally because of the distance involved.

"It was great to see three sub-unions being ARU, QRU and Downs Rugby getting on board with the initiative.”
