Community support for dialysis patients

FOR more than four and a half hours a day, three days a week Russell Martin undergoes the procedure that keeps him alive.

The Bli Bli local is one of the lucky ones who has his biggest support network in his wife Geraldine by his side through it all.

For others undergoing dialysis on the Coast, a personal support network may not exist which makes community support all the more important.

The Kidney Support Network is one of these groups making a difference in the lives of people like Russell, transporting them to and from their appointments.

Russell said the service takes so much pressure off him while he undergoes his daily procedure.

"We are very grateful for the support," he said.

"I have nothing but admiration for what they've done for us.

"We are very fortunate that funding came available."

The Support Network has only recently resurrected their transport system after lacking funding for the vehicles.

Branch Manager of the Support Network, Kathy Rayner said it's a service the community are able to provide for the community.

"So many people don't really realise how many people are on dialysis," she said.

"We provide an important service for these people."

Other groups in the community are also finding ways to support those suffering.

Social worker, John Buchanan from the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service is running a monthly kidney disease support group for men.

He said every kidney disease journey is different.

"Many of the men living with kidney disease have said that talking with others who are experiencing a similar journey is incredibly helpful," he said.

The support group now runs on a monthly basis as an informal barbecue at Cotton Tree and has a growing amount of interest.
