Community spirit puts show on track

"IF there was no show it would feel like (cyclone) Debbie had won".

This is why Proserpine Quota club service director Jill Farinelli and 11 fellow members participated in a Proserpine Showgrounds Working Bee this morning.

And they weren't alone, standing alongside 30-40 others representing a broad cross-section of the community.

"We are doing whatever we are asked whether that is picking up glass, throwing rubbish away and clearing the grounds," Ms Farinelli said.

"We also have people who can't bend over or pick things up so they are helping by doing the morning tea."

Proserpine show committee president Donna Rogers praised the hard working members of the community for donating their time and effort for a good cause.

"We have had people walking across the grounds picking up whatever they could find, it's a horrible job but we are so lucky all these people turned up," she said.

"To have this support is great because we wouldn't have been able to do this on our own."

The Proserpine Show has been one of the most important annual community events for the Whitsunday region, running for the last 105 years.

Ms Rogers reinforced how important it was for the show to go ahead despite the enormous amount of work needed.

"This is something we usually have so we want to bring about a bit of normality," she said.

"The show was created (105) years ago so people could catch up once a year, this was the big community day and it still has that feel about it."

Ms Rogers said the show helped support local community groups with fundraising including the Rotary Club, The Church of England, Whitsunday Poultry Club, Girl Guides and more.

The Proserpine show is scheduled to take place on June 23-24.
